You can grow courgettes in containers. They will do perfectly fine, and it means you can fit them into the patio, balcony or other space. The amount of fruit you should expect depends on how much you can get into the pot.

Tell tale fungus – but don’t worry about it.

Growing courgettes in containers

Courgettes are easy grow plants, even if you don’t have a lot of space for them.

You can grow courgettes in containers. They will do perfectly fine, and it means you can fit them into the patio, balcony or other space. The amount of fruit you should expect depends on how much you can get into the pot.

Courgettes are sorted off in early April indoors and as late as June outside. You can have a courgette crop all through the summer, and blanch and freeze those you don’t use.

Courgettes tend to spread out, but there is nothing to stop you training them vertically.

Planting out

Plant them into 12 inch, 30 cm pots of good quality compost. You can add well rotted manure or slow release pellets.

They like a sunny position. As they grow, add more compost to the container, unless, of course, you are growing in a grow bag – possibly the ideal container for them.

Flowers

By June you will have flowers and fruit on April sown plants and pretty soon you will have fruit behind them. After a few days, tease off the spent flowers to avoid blossom end rot.

Care

Since these are in pots they will dry out more quickly than plants grown in beds. For this reason you need to water more. Also, you need to feed more because the constant watering will remove the nutrients – a weekly feed is idea. But you must remember to water every day.

Take fruits when they are6 inches, 15 cm, long.

Problems

You can get aphids, but the major problem is fungal infection which seems to raise its head very quickly. However there is nothing to do about it because the fungus doesn’t really affect the plant when it is at it’s most productive.
